Jin alerted me to a Japan Hero post on the new Dancougar anime, DANCOUGAR NOVA.

The robots for this series look absolutely fantastic - and I definitely want the toys.

The character designs make me want to regurgitate my lunch.

According to Jin, who can actually read the Japanese text...

"The story takes place in the 22nd century when there are conflicts raging across the planet.
Dancouga Nova is the "ally of the weak" in this troubled time and regarded as a "god" though its own pilots don't recongize its significance. "

Sigh. ANOTHER sequel that is completely unlike the original [see TRANSFORMERS: 2007]. No mention of a redone Shapiro Keats (the makeup-wearing ace pilot who defected to the alien Zorbados Muge empire so he could be a makeup-wearing alien conqueror) or Sara (his girl who tried to fly away with him, but couldn't, so she piloted a robot cougar to defeat him).

Here is a page on the REAL Dancougar - the Dancougar Database.

There have been "sequels" unlike the originals that are good - BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and TRANSFORMERS: BEAST WARS, for example. Both of these are very good shows and in many ways better than their predecessors - but I seriously doubt they did anything but anger most of the established fanbase.

BEAST WARS was helped by talented writers who communicated with fans online and added situations in the story (such as the characters finding the Ark) that pleased established fans. Still, I think this only worked with the VERY fanatical fans - no casual fan of G1 I ever talked to liked BW. (Luckily, the kids bought the very well-done toys, so the show stayed alive).

BATTLESTAR GALACICA is simply well-written (for the most part) and smartly done. Stephen Browne points out that one of the show's virtues is that it comments on current events in ways that both liberals and conservatives can appreciate. I still prefer the look of the old series by far - too much "let's have dark corridors and dark battles where no one can actually SEE anything" in the new BSG.

I somehow seriously doubt that DANCOUGAR:NOVA will be in the BW/BSG minority of good, but unfaithful remakes.
