Trider G-7 Italian OP...

Here's a video of the Italian OP to INVINCIBLE ROBOT TRYDER G-7.

The Italian market dubbed many anime shows, and replaced the theme songs most of the time.
This dramatic opening is an example of a song which is better than the original - but you have to wonder if the composers saw the visuals they were singing to.

The show itself, about young Watta Takeo who takes over his father's Takeo General Company (robot-for-rent) is mainly remembered for being the replacement for...GUNDAM! Sunrise and Clover needed a lighthearted replacement for Yoshiyuki Tomino's folly (it came back with a vengeance, of course). Tryder itself is notable for being a robot with 7 modes (take that, Sixshot). The T-Hawk, T-Cosmic, T-Beagle [robot torso mounted on tank treads, and T-Eagle forms were made with the toy itself, while I believe the other 2 modes [THAT I CAN'T FIND THE NAMES FOR!] required a separate shuttle. Tomino went on to do IDEON (toys produced by Tomy).

Nice find. In general I think the Italian original songs are as good as if not better than the Japanese themes.

I couldn't resist the urge to take out my copy of TV MAGAZINE POCKET ENCYCLOPEDIA: TRYDER G-7 to get a list of the seven modes:

1. Tryder Cosmic: "heavy bomber spacecraft"
2. Tryder Beagle: "super heavy tank"
3. Tryder Eagle: "heavy bomber fighter"
4. Tryder Hawk
5. Tryder Marine
6. Tryder Mobile
(air, sea, and land modes of the Tryder head *only*)
7. Tryder Fortress (combined with the Tryder Shuttle)
8. New Tryder Fortress (combined with the New Tryder Shuttle)

Tryder was designed by Kunio Okawara (GUNDAM). Note that Tryder shares a similar lower trunk design with Gundam.

The enemy mecha are by Izubuchi Yutaka, who also did enemy mecha design for DAIMOS (his debut) and enemy costume/monster designs for the Super Sentai from DYNAMAN through FLASHMAN. The Galman Empire ships in YAMATO III are his, as are all the enemy mecha in FINAL YAMATO. He worked alongside Okawara in XABUNGLE and GALIENT (Okawara did the title mecha and Izubuchi did most of the rest). DUNBINE also showcases a lot of his work, though once again the lead mecha is not his (it's a design by Miyatake Kazutaka of Studio Nue).

A note about IDEON: According to the Japanese Wikipedia entry, IDEON was originally supposed to be a follow-up to SCIENCE ADVENTURE SQUAD TANSER 5. As you already know, the basic Ideon design was Tomy's, but what I didn't know was that the three vehicles were originally supposed to be an ordinary armored truck, a tanker truck, and a preschool bus that merged into the robot Ideon whenever an emergency occurred. When Tomino took the helm, he kept the Ideon name* and basic design, but enlarged each of the vehicles to giant size. The entry says that the Sixth Civilization people were giant-sized (an idea later used in MACROSS) but I don't recall anything in the show or the movie or in print elsewhere confirming this.

*I doubt this, as other sources, including Sunrise's official IDEON RECORDS COLLECTION vol. 1, state the show and lead mecha were to be named 'Gandorowa' (a name later used for the ultimate Baph Clan weapon). IRC1 reprints Tomino's early series proposal (from late 1979? early 1980?) which mentions the 'Ide' (as in the actual series itself), so presumably the name 'Ideon' was coined to tie the mecha closer to the 'Ide'. (And besides, Ideon is a nicer name!)

Another IDEON note: since I was rambling about mecha designers, I might as well note that the non-lead mecha in IDEON were by 'Submarine' (consisting of Higuchi Yuuichi and others whom I don't know), which also did the mecha designs for the J9 series and ACROBUNCH.

http://www.allcinema.net/prog/show_p.php?num_p=117765

also lists DALTANIAS and CYBER COP as having Submarine designs.
